Dental implant treatment is a staged procedure typically completed over six to twelve months. It involves an initial consultation, surgical placement of a titanium implant, a healing period to allow the implant to integrate with the jawbone, and the final fitting of a custom-made crown. The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic and is designed to restore both function and appearance.
Key Stages of the Dental Implant Process
- Assessment and Treatment Planning
A comprehensive examination is carried out, including X-rays and 3D imaging where required, to assess bone quality and gum health and to develop a personalised treatment plan. - Bone Grafting (if required)
Where insufficient bone is present, a bone graft may be recommended to provide adequate support for the implant. This may extend the overall treatment timeframe. - Implant Placement
The implant is surgically placed into the jawbone through a small incision in the gum. Once positioned, the area is either closed with sutures or fitted witha healing component.
- Healing and Osseointegration
Over a period of three to six months, the implant integrates with the surrounding bone, forming a stable foundation for the replacement tooth. - Abutment Placement
After healing, a small connector (abutment) is attached to the implant to support the final restoration. - Crown Placement
Impressions are taken to create a bespoke crown, which is then secured to the abutment to complete the treatment.
Aftercare and Recovery
Mild swelling or bruising is common following surgery and can usually be managed with standard pain relief. Patients are advised to follow a soft diet initially and maintain careful oral hygiene while avoiding direct brushing of the surgical site. Smoking should be avoided, as it can negatively affect healing and long-term implant success.
